"Let's suppose that the first colour I apply to the canvas is red. Now, that action determines everything else that happens to the painting. After that I could put yellow on it, and some blue; then I might perhaps obliterate the red with black, and the blue perhaps became yellow, and the yellow purple, while the black changes to white. Obviously anything can happen. But the whole fascinating process began with the first red, and if I hadn't begun with red, the whole painting would have been different. Is there a system, is there order, in this haos?" (Karel Appel)
